Student Hospice Organization of Penn (SHOOP)
The Student Hospice Organization of Penn (SHOOP) helps Penn students become hospice volunteers. Penn Student Amit Mehrotra established SHOOP in 2001. Amit had received hospice training in high school, and recognized an opportunity on Penn’s campus. SHOOP helps students by coordinating volunteer training and helps with community outreaching bringing the message of hospice services available for all under their Medicare benefit. Our two projects apart from our regular volunteering activities are Camp Erin and Dreamcatchers. These projects consist of volunteering and fundraising for a children bereavement camp every spring and making a hospice volunteer's wish come true, respectively. If you would like to take a greater role in these projects, we would be happy to have you on one of our committees (see current events).
Our goal is to enable volunteers to explore the rewarding experience of hospice care and make a difference in their community. Volunteers are a vital part of Hospice and can help in many different ways. For example, volunteers can help by sitting with a patient, reading to them, talking with them, running an errand, or just lending an ear to a stressed caregiver. The most important thing is presence- just being there with patients and their loved ones makes a big difference. Our other goals are raising awareness for our two projects and becoming the voice of hospice on campus by providing information on end of life issues, decision-making, management and policy.
Events in the past:
Apart from our volunteering initiatives and annual projects, we have speaker panel events, frequently in collaboration with other clubs on campus. For example, we held an end-of-life care panel with WUHC and PBJ in 2014.
